Manuels River announces initiative to support the Community Food Bank in Conception Bay South/Paradise.

Manuels River hopes to provide more than 1000 meals over the coming weeks in support of the local food bank.

May 6, 2020 – Conception Bay South, NL – Manuels River Natural Heritage Society, Inc.

Community food programs play an important role in ensuring all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador can access food during the COVID-19 pandemic. The CBS/Paradise Community Food Bank has up to 800 families registered with their location. Currently, they do not provide meats, poultry or fresh made protein food options in their hampers.

Today, Janet Rumsey, Executive Director, on behalf of the Manuels River, announced the launch of the Homemade Meal Food Hamper Top-Up Program, which supports residents of Conception Bay South/Paradise with the option to add homemade meals to their food hampers. To make this project a reality, the COVID-19 Community Food Program Support Fund is contributing $5270 and the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast is contributing $3000 to this project.

Thanks to Food First NL and their partnership with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to establish a COVID-19 Community Food Program Support Fund, Manuels River, in partnership with Chef Mike Wozney, is able to offer this program over the coming weeks to support those in need.

Quotes

“As a registered charity, Manuels River is grateful for the ongoing support from our community. At Manuels River we really want to support our community during this time of crisis. We are covering the use of the equipment and utilities, leaving 100% of the funding to cover food cost, packaging and food preparation. We are excited to make our first meal delivery this week.”

 – Janet Rumsey, ED, Manuels River

““In just a short time of being open in CBS we have grown to love the sense of community and are thrilled that we are able to help out during these difficult times. The only way we will get through this is together as a community and we are very glad to be a part of it. “

– Cinthia and Mike Wozney of the recently opened Frida’s Riverside Café

“The Manuels River Interpretation Centre has been home to the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast (representing CBS and Mount Pearl) for the past number of years and when we learned from one of our members (Don Sword) that MR along with Chef Mike, was getting involved in the Food First NL Project, we immediately put together a small fundraiser and were able to raise $3000.00 to support the program.  During the Covid-19 crisis the Rotary Club has been looking for ways to give back to the community and this was a way to help support the Centre, our Chef, keep people employed and provide home cooked meals for the Food Bank.”

– Steve Young, President, Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast

“Manuels River has created an unique and heartwarming way to support the CBS / Paradise Community Food Bank in this unprecedented time of uncertainty. We are extremely proud that this idea has been initiated in Conception Bay South. It’s another great example of our residents and businesses coming together to help one another in a time of great need. Even though COVID-19 has caused hardships for many, we continue to see so many wonderful examples of people reaching out to support those who need it the most.”

– Mayor French, Town of Conception Bay South
